Artist Statement for the Exibition Titled "Are You In?"

Through my personal artistic endeavors and those educationally provided to me, I strive to explore the intricacies of my own personal history in a manner that is presentable and in some respects interactive for the viewer. I want to explore the depth of my own existence, and for a moment celebrate both positive and negative experiences of the moment or of the past. In my current work, I examine more specific interactions within the world. Those interactions involve places I frequent, viewer action/reaction, user action/reaction, and witnessing the interaction between myself and others, or others and those around them. In particular, I have focused my work on a particular sect or subculture of college student atmosphere. It explores the borders between social sincerity and pretension, stereotype and individuality. I desire to place emphasis on each side of situations where such interaction takes place. I state this because as an artist, and also as one who exists in the described situation from time to time, I am occasionally a viewer, some of the time the individual interacting; in other situations I act as a mediator, and - often enough - a hypocrite, driving situations onward. I am working to continue pushing my work further into realms that I have already touched upon, through an intimate exploration of environments; the real, and surreal; mundane or amazing.
